Power Outage Reported Across Tokyo After Substation Fire

An estimated 350,000 people were left without power in Tokyo after a fire broke out at a Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) power substation in Niiza city, in Tokyo’s Saitama Prefecture, on October 12. The incident happened around 3 pm on Wednesday, local time, when emergency services were notified by the public about black smoke rising from the station.

The fire left homes, businesses and government buildings without electricity, while also leading to the cancellation of some subway services, according to reports.

Power was later restored, with reports quoting Saitama Prefectural Police as saying an investigation into the cause of the blaze was underway. Credit: YouTube/すずきけんいちろう (Kenichiro Suzuki)
