Rundown properties to be cleared in historic city-state venture
Maryland state and Baltimore City officials announce more than $700 million in a joint revitalization project addressing rundown city neighborhoods. The goal is to use the money to demolish thousands of vacant buildings over the next four years. The governor and the mayor called this partnership "historic." Demolition began Tuesday in the Sandtown-Winchester neighborhood in west Baltimore, where Freddie Gray was arrested and the where the civil unrest began. In this first year, it's estimated about 20 city blocks can be completely cleared to create space for parks, affordable housing and businesses.
