Statue of Liberty Plunged Into Darkness After 'Power Outage'

The iconic Statue of Liberty in New York City was plunged into darkness on the evening of Tuesday, March 7, after a power outage caused its lighting system to fail.

The monument is usually lit up to full capacity, but all that could be seen for hours on March 7 were the monument’s headlights and lamp, with the flood lighting failing beneath.

In a tweet, the National Parks Service said the outage was most likely due to “new emergency generator/Hurricane Sandy recovery project work.” The lighting returned later in the night.

Some social media users credited the event as a supportive nod to International Women’s Day, March 8. Credit: Courtesy of EarthCam via Storyful
