Suspected Syrian Chemical Attack Would Be the Largest Since 2013 Ghouta Attack, Says UN Disarmament Chief

In an emergency April 5 meeting of the United Nations Security Council, held in New York, members gathered to discuss the alleged used to chemical weapons in Khan Shaykhun, Syria, on April 4.

UN Disarmament Chief Kim Won-soo said details about the attack, which killed at least 70 and injured over 200, were still emerging but said he has been in close contact with the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) which is gathering and analyzing information from all sources.

Won-soo noted that videos, which were said to be taken from the scene, and shared on social media showed victims with symptoms including respiratory problems, vomiting, fainting, foaming at the mouth, and pinpoint pupils.

Won-soo said, “if confirmed, this would constitute the single largest chemical weapons attack in Syria since the attack on eastern Ghouta in August 2013.” Credit: YouTube/United Nations via Storyful
