Wall of Dust Looms Over Southeast Iowa

A large dust storm was seen looming over New London, Iowa, on Sunday, May 7, as the National Weather Service (NWS) warned of a severe thunderstorm in the area that day.

Video recorded by Raymond Vens shows an imposing cloud of dust hanging over the town. He told Storyful that he and his partner, a certified NWS Storm Spotter, were able to get a glimpse of the haboob after they “saw the storm developing on the radar.”

The NWS warned of possible hail and winds up to 60 miles per hour that day. The NWS said that haboobs “occur as a result of thunderstorm outflow winds,” adding that “thunderstorm winds can start a dust storm that can drastically reduce visibility.” Credit: Raymond Vens via Storyful
