Warner Bros. Discovery CEO cancels release of nearly completed DC Comics Batgirl film

BRAD SMITH: DC comic films "Batgirl" is being completely scrapped, girl, by Warner Brothers, after nearly finishing the $90 million film. The movie had test screenings for audiences in anticipation of a late 2020 debut. And those tests were so poor that the studio chose to cut its losses and ax the film for the sake of the brand's future.

JULIE HYMAN: And that was just according to some reporting. And there's also David Zaslav, who's taken over the company. There's some talk that he just wants to sort of start fresh when it comes to the DC Comics universe. Obviously DC Comics has never been as successful as the MCU.

BRIAN SOZZI: Isn't the movie done? Why can't Zaslav just sign off on it, stick it in the theaters and see how it does? It's not his project. Get it out there. This isn't CNN+, it's "Batgirl."

BRAD SMITH: Yeah.

JULIE HYMAN: I guess it costs costs money to release it also, right?
