Why the party's over for Airbnb
STORY: Unauthorized gatherings will be permanently banned in homes listed on the rental platform
But Airbnb is lifting the 16-person limit, so larger homes can be booked to full occupancy
The platform began imposing much stricter rules in 2019, starting with a global ban on “party houses”
It was extended to other listings in response to the global health crisis in August 2020
Airbnb saw a sharp 44% drop in unsanctioned partying when the prohibition was imposed
Even so 6,600 guests and some hosts were suspended in 2021 for attempting to violate the ban
In May 2022, Airbnb revenue was up 70% year-on-year bringing in $1.5 billion in Q1, 2022
