Evacuation Order Remains in Richmond, Indiana, as Industrial Site Burns
An evacuation order remained in place for some residents of Richmond, eastern Indiana, overnight into Wednesday, April 12, after an industrial fire, local officials said.
Footage posted to Twitter shows large plumes of black smoke rise from the site of the fire on Tuesday afternoon.
By Tuesday night, the Wayne County Emergency Management Agency said it was “unknown what chemicals may or may not be in the debris”. The fire was expected to burn for several days. An evacuation order covering a half-mile radius was in place.
According to Richmond Mayor Dave Snow, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management were on site “evaluating any potential hazards resulting from the fire”.
