Fiery Explosion Reported at Hoover Dam

An electrical transformer caught fire and produced a loud explosion at the Hoover Dam in Nevada on Tuesday morning, July 19, startling visitors and prompting a response from local fire crews, officials said.

This footage of flames and black smoke was captured by Kristy Hairston, who told Storyful she was taking photos when she “heard a bang,” turned around, and saw the fire.

The Bureau of Reclamation (USBR), which operates the iconic 1930s-era hydroelectric power plant, said a fire at an A5 transformer was extinguished by USBR fire crews at the Hoover Dam.

No visitors or employees were injured, and there was no risk to the power grid, USBR said. The cause of the fire was being investigated, they added. Credit: Kristy Hairston via Storyful
