Renault, Nissan in talks over reshaping alliance

STORY: Renault and Nissan said Monday (October 10) they were in talks about radically reshaping their alliance.

The negotiations could prompt the biggest reset since the 2018 arrest of longtime chief Carlos Ghosn.

Two Reuters sources say one option is for Renault to sell some of its Nissan stake.

The French dominance of the alliance has long been a sore point for the Japanese side.

Renault owns 43% of the Japanese firm, which in turn owns a 15% stake in its French partner.

Now Renault wants Nissan to invest in its new EV venture, which is being set up separately from its legacy combustion engine unit.

One source says Nissan is under pressure to reduce its stake in Renault in return.

The two firms refused to comment on the talks, besides saying that they were engaged in “trustful discussions” over “structural improvements”.

At the start of this year, the pair set out plans to invest $26 billion over five years in electric car development.

Renault shares were up around 4% by Monday afternoon following the reports.
