Taipei mayor calls for security review after boat breach

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安)called on the central government to thoroughly review and improve security mechanismson Wednesday (June 12) aftera Chinese national sailed a speedboat into the Tamsui River.

In a startling breach of Taiwan's maritime security, the Chinese national surnamed Juanillegally enteredthe nation on a motorboat a day earlier, raising concerns over national security vulnerabilities.

The Coast Guard Administration (海巡署) conducted an investigation into the incident, revealing that the failure to intercept the speedboat in time was not due to radar detection failure but rather human error.

As a result, the Coast Guard's Patrol Division, led by Liao Te-sheng (廖德聖), and nine others will face disciplinary actions ranging from admonitions to minor demerits.

This move underscores the seriousness with which the authorities are treating the breach and their commitment to holding individuals accountable.

Mayor Chiang emphasized the government's responsibility to ensure public safety and stressed the importance of identifying the causes of the breach. He advocated for a comprehensive solution and review of the problem to prevent future incidents.
